Mixing conversational and interactive traffic in the UMTS radio access network

چکیده
The definition and assessment of suitable Radio Resource Management (RRM) strategies able to provide QoS in the framework of the UTRA segment of UMTS is a key issue for achieving the expectations created on 3G technology. This paper proposes and evaluates specific algorithms for the different RRM functions involved in the uplink direction in a scenario with a mixture of interactive and conversational services. In particular the effect of prioritization of conversational users in the admission control has been analyzed in terms of admission, dropping probabilities and packet delay. Furthermore, the paper also studies the importance of suitable congestion control mechanisms that cope with load fluctuations in order to guarantee the negotiated QoS to already connected users. These fluctuations are mainly due to the randomness in the traffic generation of interactive users, that can seriously degrade performance of both conversational and even interactive users if no congestion control is carried out.

Traffic characterization for a UMTS radio access network
In this paper we present a UMTS traffic model to evaluate the Measurement Based Admission Control (MBAC) algorithms in a simulator environment. The traffic model describes the traffic aggregation at the Base Station (BS) and Radio Network Controller (RNC) with a Markov Modulated Arrival Process (MMAP). In the model we describe the batch and packet sizes in the Radio Access Network (RAN). Furthe...

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third-generation cellular network that enables high-speed wireless Internet access. This paper investigates the performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) over UMTS utilizing a common and four dedicated transport channels with bit rates up to 2 Mb/s. The performance of TCP was examined under varying channel conditions. Bulk data tra...
متن کاملIP versus AAL2 for transport in the UMTS radio access network
In this paper, we analytically compare IP versus AAL2/ATM as a transport technology in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), where stringent delay bounds are to be met for both real-time and non real-time traffic. We particularly select voice and Web traffic so as to illustrate our investigation. We show that, for the case of voice traffic, AAL2/ATM has a small advantage over IP, i...
متن کاملUse of Traffic Separation Techniques for the Transport of HSPA and R99 Traffic in the Radio Access Network with Differentiated Quality of Service
This article presents various traffic separation approaches to transmit HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA) traffic in the existing ATM-based UMTS Radio Access Network, together with Release 99 (R99) traffic. The traffic separation technique enables QoS differentiations of HSPA and R99 traffic, while aiming to achieve a maximum utilization of the transport resources in the radio access network. The potential be...

The thesis work is about the investigation of different handovers in the 3G UMTS network which is the vital issue to the network to maintain the user's connection during in the ongoing session with the user's movement. The investigation is based on the UMTS QoS traffic classes. For this purpose the soft and the hard handovers techniques are analyzed in different scenarios implemented in the OPN...
